Dubai and UAE visas

Cancelling a UAE residence and staying abroad: who cancels, the AED 120 Dubai fee, the 60-day grace period, the 180-day rule and the re-entry permit

Someone leaving the UAE for good must have their residence officially cancelled, and someone who stays outside for more than 180 consecutive days loses their residence automatically. Based on the official pages of the UAE Government portal and the Dubai residency directorate, this article explains the cancellation process, the fee, the grace period after cancellation, the exceptions to the 180-day rule, the re-entry permit and two examples.

Ending life in the UAE, or a long trip outside it, raises important administrative questions: who cancels the residence? How long can you stay after cancellation? What happens to the residence if you stay outside for more than six months? This article is based on the "General provisions for the residence visa" page of the official UAE Government portal (`u.ae`) and the service page "Cancellation of all types of residence permits" of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA), checked on 25 October 2026.

The UAE Government portal says the grace periods are "flexible and up to 6 months" depending on the residence category. For each type of residence, check the exact period on that service's page; for example, GDRFA gives 180 days for the green residence.

The 180-day rule

If a foreign resident stays outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days, their residence lapses automatically and they need a new entry. The UAE Government portal exempts these groups, provided they hold a valid residence:

GroupDetails
Foreign wife of a UAE citizen—
Domestic workers accompanying EmiratisAccompanying a scholarship student or a patient sent abroad, or in ruling-family homes abroad, or accompanying members of diplomatic missions
Patients and their companionsWith a medical report approved by a UAE medical authority
Public sector employeesSent abroad for training or to work in offices abroad, with their families
StudentsStudents enrolled at universities abroad with a valid residence
InvestorsHolding a valid UAE residence
Dependants of UAE diplomatic representatives—
OthersThose exempted by an ICP decision who pay the fees

Golden and green residence holders also do not need a re-entry permit.

Two examples

These examples are hypothetical and only put the official rules and fees above side by side.

Example 1: a family leaving Dubai. A father who is a private sector employee sponsors his wife and two children.

OrderActionGDRFA fee
1Cancel the residence of the wife and two children3 × (100 + 10 + 10) = AED 360
2Cancel the father's work permit at the Ministry of Human Resources, with the letter confirming receipt of all wages and gratuityBy the company
3Cancel the father's residenceAED 120
Total GDRFA fees—AED 480

After cancellation, per the GDRFA page, they have 60 days to stay or leave.

Example 2: an Abu Dhabi resident who has been outside for 8 months. Their residence lapsed after 180 days. If they have a valid reason, they can apply from abroad for a re-entry permit:

ItemCalculationAmount
8 months, about 240 days, in 30-day periods8 × 100AED 800

Whether the count starts from the first day of absence or from day 181 is not on the page; the figure above is an estimate. If they were a Dubai resident, per the page this service would not be available to them.

Practical points

  • If you are leaving for good, leave the cancellation to the sponsor and make sure it is done before you travel.
  • If you sponsor a family, cancel the dependants' residences first.
  • Employees: sign the letter confirming receipt of wages and gratuity only after actually receiving them; see the article "End-of-service gratuity in the UAE private sector".
  • Close your tenancy and utilities too; the article "Connecting electricity and water in Dubai (DEWA)" explains moving out.
  • If you have a long trip ahead, plan for the 180-day rule; overstaying a visa is also fined, see the article "Overstaying a visa in the UAE".

Royal Golden does not give legal or immigration advice. This article is general information, and the decision on any residence rests with ICP and the Dubai residency directorate.
