Overview

The Republic of Vanuatu lies about 1,750 km east of northern Australia and 540 km north-east of New Caledonia, with Solomon Islands to the north-west and Fiji to the east. Its islands stretch for about 1,300 km from north to south.

The islands are geologically young and of volcanic origin; several volcanoes are active, among them Mount Yasur on Tanna and the twin craters of Ambrym. The climate is tropical, with a warm, wet season from November to April when tropical cyclones can occur.

Port Vila on Efate is the capital and the largest town; Luganville on Espiritu Santo is the second town. The country is divided into six provinces: Torba, Sanma, Penama, Malampa, Shefa and Tafea.

History

  1. c. 3,000 years ago

The first inhabitants, people of the Lapita culture, settle the islands; sites have been found on Efate, Malakula and Aore.

  2. 1606

A Spanish expedition led by Pedro Fernandes de Queirós reaches the largest island, which still bears the name Espiritu Santo.

  3. 1774

James Cook charts the archipelago and names it the New Hebrides.

  4. 1906

France and the United Kingdom agree to govern the islands jointly as the Anglo-French Condominium of the New Hebrides, with two parallel administrations.

  5. 1942–1945

Espiritu Santo and Efate become major Allied bases in the Pacific War; Million Dollar Point and the wreck of the SS President Coolidge date from this period.

  6. 30 July 1980

The New Hebrides become independent as the Republic of Vanuatu, with Walter Lini as the first Prime Minister.

  7. 2015

Cyclone Pam causes heavy damage across the southern and central islands.

  8. December 2024

A strong earthquake near Efate damages buildings in Port Vila; reconstruction continues in the years after.

Government

Vanuatu is a unitary parliamentary republic. Parliament has one chamber of 52 members elected for four years. The Malvatumauri, the National Council of Chiefs, advises on custom and land.

The President is head of state and is elected for five years by an electoral college of the members of Parliament and the presidents of the provincial councils. The Prime Minister is head of government and is elected by Parliament from among its members.

People, languages and economy

The 2020 national census counted 300,019 people; most are ni-Vanuatu of Melanesian descent. Bislama, an English-based creole, is the national language; Bislama, English and French are official languages, and more than a hundred Oceanic languages are spoken on the islands.

Custom (kastom) shapes daily life and land tenure. Kava is the traditional drink and the nakamal its meeting place. Vanuatu sand drawing is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, and Chief Roi Mata's Domain on Efate and nearby islands is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Agriculture employs most people; copra, kava, beef, cocoa and timber are exported. Tourism and services, including financial services, are the other pillars of the economy. The currency is the vatu.

The Vanuatu passport

The passport of the Republic of Vanuatu is issued to Vanuatu citizens. The table below shows the entry rules for Vanuatu citizens as listed in the source on October 18, 2026: whether a visa is needed beforehand, can be obtained on arrival, or is replaced by an electronic visa or travel authorisation.

Important changes

  • Schengen area: the visa exemption for Vanuatu citizens was suspended from 2022; Regulation (EU) 2025/11 of 19 December 2024 moved Vanuatu to the list of countries whose nationals need a visa. Vanuatu passport holders therefore need a Schengen visa for every Schengen state.
  • United Kingdom: since 19 July 2023 Vanuatu nationals need a visa to visit the UK.
  • Ireland also requires a visa.

What to keep in mind

  • Entry rules change; airlines and border authorities decide on the day of travel. Always confirm with the embassy or official portal of your destination.
  • Allowed stays, electronic forms and fees differ by country and by the purpose of the trip.
  • Holders of other nationalities or residence permits may be subject to different rules.
