Argentina is preparing to open applications for its citizenship-by-investment programme in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to a report by CEOWORLD Magazine published on 26 October. The magazine describes it as the first programme of its kind in South America. Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced the prices on 2 October.

According to the report, applicants can choose between a non-refundable contribution of $350,000 to the national treasury and the purchase of $800,000 in special government bonds held for seven years. A spouse adds $100,000, each child under 18 adds $25,000, and each unmarried child aged 18 to 25 without children of their own adds $100,000. Under the contribution route, a family of two adults and two minor children would pay $500,000.

CEOWORLD writes that applications are handled by the Agency for Citizenship by Investment Programmes, a body under the Ministry of Economy. It checks the investment, requests background reports from the security, financial intelligence, criminal records and identity authorities, and sends a recommendation to the National Directorate of Migration, which has 30 business days to decide. Payments must go through the formal financial system, and a contribution does not guarantee approval. No prior residence in Argentina is required.

The legal basis is a decree rather than a law passed by Congress: emergency decree 366/2025 of May 2025 created the category, and decree 524/2025 of 31 July 2025 set the procedure. According to the report, courts have ruled against other parts of decree 366/2025 and the government has appealed to the Supreme Court; no court has struck down the investment route itself. Opposition lawmakers have introduced bills in both chambers of Congress to repeal the programme.

What it means

The prices and the procedure have been announced, but the application system had not opened by 26 October, and no official forecast of applicants or revenue has been published. Because the programme rests on a decree that faces repeal bills, its terms may still change before or after applications open.
