Dubai and UAE visas

Green or golden residence for skilled employees in the UAE: a salary of AED 15,000 or 30,000, 5 or 10 years, a comparison and Dubai fees

A skilled employee in the UAE has two routes to a long-term residence that is independent of the employer: the 5-year green residence with a salary of at least AED 15,000, and the 10-year golden residence with a salary of at least AED 30,000. Based on the official pages of the Dubai residency directorate, this article puts side by side the conditions, documents, duration, the grace period after cancellation, the fees and two examples.

An ordinary work residence in the UAE depends on the employer: when the contract ends, the residence is cancelled too. But skilled employees with a high salary have two routes that make their residence more independent of the employer: the "green residence" and the "golden residence". The article "UAE residence for partners and investors" compared the two for investors; this article makes the same comparison for employees. It is based on two service pages of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA): "Issuing a green residence permit (highly skilled worker)" and "Issuing a golden residence permit (scientists and specialists)", checked on 25 October 2026.

The golden residence page also has an ongoing condition: if the salary falls below AED 30,000 or the contract is cancelled, the golden residence is cancelled, and GDRFA may check during the residence's validity that the conditions still hold.

Two examples

These examples are hypothetical and only put the official conditions and fees above side by side. Both apply from inside the UAE.

Example 1: an engineer earning AED 20,000. Their salary is above the green residence threshold of AED 15,000 and below the golden residence threshold of AED 30,000; so only the green residence is open to them, provided they are at skill level one to three and hold a bachelor's degree.

ItemCalculationAmount
5-year green residence, estimated with the GDRFA rule200 + (3 × 100)AED 500
Knowledge and innovation dirhams10 + 10AED 20
In-country fee and delivery500 + 20AED 520
5-year Emirates ID(5 × 100) + 100AED 600
Total—AED 1,640

Example 2: a doctor earning AED 35,000. They meet the golden residence condition, provided they are at skill level one or two and hold a valid medical licence and comprehensive health insurance for themselves and their family.

ItemCalculationAmount
10-year golden residence, estimated with the GDRFA rule1,100 + (8 × 100)AED 1,900
Knowledge and innovation dirhams10 + 10AED 20
In-country fee and delivery500 + 20AED 520
10-year Emirates ID(10 × 100) + 100AED 1,100
Total—AED 3,540

Ask when applying how the fee for years beyond two and the card fee for long periods are calculated; the figures above are estimates. If this doctor's salary later falls below AED 30,000, under the GDRFA page the golden residence is cancelled.

Practical points

  • Check your job's skill level on your Ministry of Human Resources work permit; the golden residence accepts only levels one and two.
  • Both use the monthly salary; prepare a salary certificate and six months of bank statements.
  • If your salary is close to AED 30,000, keep the golden residence's ongoing condition in your plans.
  • The green residence's 180-day grace period after cancellation is a good window for finding a new job.
  • If you do not have a job yet, see the article "The UAE jobseeker visit visa".

Royal Golden does not give legal or immigration advice. This article is general information, and the decision on any residence rests with the official UAE authorities.
