Remote work residence in the UAE: a monthly income of USD 3,500, work for a foreign employer, documents and Dubai fees

The UAE gives a one-year residence without a sponsor to someone who works remotely for an employer outside the UAE; the main conditions are a monthly income of at least USD 3,500 and valid health insurance. Based on the official pages of the UAE Government portal and the Dubai residency directorate, this article explains the conditions, the documents, the two stages of entry permit and residence permit, the fees and two examples.

Remote work has become routine for many professionals: a programmer, designer or consultant who works for a company in Europe or Asia does not have to live in that country. The UAE has a "virtual work" residence for this group that needs no employer or sponsor in the UAE. This article is based on the "Residence visa for working outside the UAE" page of the official UAE Government portal (`u.ae`) and two service pages of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) for the virtual work entry permit and residence permit, checked on 25 October 2026.

Who is this residence for?

The UAE Government portal says foreigners employed outside the UAE may live in the UAE legally with a virtual work visa and enter under their own sponsorship. The main conditions:

ConditionWhat the official pages say
Type of workRemote work for an entity outside the UAE, with proof
IncomeAt least USD 3,500 a month or its equivalent in another currency
InsuranceValid health insurance
HealthA medical fitness result
PassportValid for at least 6 months (GDRFA)
SponsorNot needed; the applicant sponsors themselves

This residence differs from an ordinary work residence: the holder works for their foreign employer, and this residence is not for employment in the UAE labour market. If you want to be employed in the UAE, see the article "Hiring in the UAE".

Two stages: entry permit and residence permit

GDRFA sets out this path in two separate services. First an entry permit is issued that allows a stay of 60 days from the date of entry to complete the residence formalities; then the virtual work residence permit is issued.

StageGDRFA documents
Entry permitA recent colour photo with a white background, a copy of a passport valid for at least 6 months, proof of employment with an entity outside the UAE and of remote work, proof of a monthly income of at least USD 3,500, valid health insurance
Residence permitColour photo, copy of the passport, copy of the health insurance, the medical fitness result, proof of remote work, a salary certificate of USD 3,500 or its equivalent, the identity card application receipt

GDRFA notes that the documents required may vary with the application details. The UAE Government portal says the application is made through ICP or GDRFA Dubai.

Fees in Dubai

StageLineAmount
Entry permitPermit feeAED 200 plus 5% value added tax, AED 210 in total
Entry permit, if the applicant is inside the UAEKnowledge Dirham, Innovation Dirham and in-country feeAED 10 + 10 + 500
Residence permitResidence permit feeAED 200
Residence permitKnowledge and Innovation DirhamsAED 10 + 10
Residence permitIn-country feeAED 500
Residence permitDeliveryAED 20

GDRFA gives 48 hours for both services and notes that the final amount may vary with the applicant's circumstances. The residence permit page does not make clear in which case the in-country fee is charged; ask when you apply. The Emirates ID also has a separate fee: ICP charges foreign residents AED 100 for each year of residence plus AED 100 smart service fee. The medical examination and insurance are also separate.

Validity, family and renewal

SubjectStated rule
LengthOne year from the date of issue (UAE Government portal and GDRFA)
RenewalRenewable (GDRFA)
FamilyThe GDRFA permit page says the holder may sponsor family members for the same period
Period after expiry or cancellation60 days to stay in the country (GDRFA)

If you want to bring your family, also weigh the family sponsorship conditions (housing, proof of relationship, insurance); the article "Family residence in the UAE" explains them.

Two examples

These examples are hypothetical and only put the official conditions and fees above side by side.

**Example 1: a programmer for a German company.** A woman who programs remotely for a company in Germany and earns USD 4,200 a month wants to live in Dubai for a year. Her income is above the USD 3,500 threshold. She applies from outside the UAE before travelling.

LineCalculationAmount
Entry permit200 + 5% taxAED 210
Residence permit—AED 200
Knowledge and Innovation Dirhams for the residence permit10 + 10AED 20
Delivery—AED 20
Identity card for one year100 + 100AED 200
Total—AED 650

The medical examination, health insurance and any in-country fee are not in this table.

**Example 2: a consultant below the threshold.** A man who gives online consultancy to a company in Canada earns USD 3,000 a month. This is below the USD 3,500 threshold, so it is not enough under the stated condition for this residence. Before applying, he can weigh other residence options, for example the green residence for freelancers and the self-employed covered in the article "UAE residence for partners and investors".

Practical points

  • The employer's letter should make clear that the work is done remotely and for an entity outside the UAE.
  • Prepare the salary certificate and bank statements so that the monthly income in dollars or another currency is shown without ambiguity.
  • Take out health insurance valid in the UAE before applying; short-term travel insurance is usually not enough for residence.
  • Track the expiry of the residence, the identity card and the insurance together; this residence lasts one year.
  • Living in the UAE may affect your tax position in your own country; check this with a tax adviser in that country.

Royal Golden does not give legal, tax or immigration advice. This article is general information, and the decision on any residence rests with the official UAE authorities.
