UAE golden residence for top students and graduates: a 95 per cent grade, a 3.5 GPA, family sponsorship and Dubai fees

The UAE gives a golden residence to top high school students and to top graduates of UAE universities or of the world's top 100 universities. Based on the official pages of the Dubai residency directorate and the UAE Government portal, this article explains each group's conditions, the documents, the duration and renewal, family sponsorship, the fees and two examples; for families whose children study in the UAE or at top universities.

The UAE golden residence is usually associated with investors, but one of its groups is top students and graduates. For a family whose child studies in the UAE or has graduated from a top university, this route can give a long-term residence with no need for an employer or sponsor. The article "UAE Golden Residency: an overview" mentions this group in one line; this article explains it in detail, based on the service page "Issuing a golden residence permit (Top students, graduates)" of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) and the golden visa page of the official UAE Government portal (`u.ae`), checked on 25 October 2026.

Three groups and their conditions

GroupGDRFA conditions
Top high school studentsA diploma from a public or private school licensed by the Ministry or a local education authority; a grade of at least 95% or its equivalent; the diploma attested by the Ministry of Education
Top graduates of UAE universitiesA bachelor's degree licensed by the Ministry of Education; a cumulative GPA of 3.5 for class A universities or 3.8 for class B; no more than two years since graduation; the degree attested by the Ministry of Higher Education
Top graduates of foreign universitiesThe university among the world's top 100 under the classification approved by the Ministry of Education; a bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.5; no more than two years since graduation; the degree attested by the Ministry of Higher Education

The two-year limit after graduation matters: a graduate who finished studying more than two years ago does not fit this group under this page. The UAE Government portal gives the "main requirement" of this group as certificates of excellence and recommendation letters from the school or university.

Two conditions that are easy to miss

In its "Additional information" section, the GDRFA page also gives two more conditions:

  • Approval of a student golden residence in this service depends on a residency file issued by the Emirate of Dubai.
  • An application cannot be filed without the approval of the relevant ministry in the system of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) or a nomination by the competent local authorities.

So first obtain the relevant ministry's approval or nomination; proof of excellence alone is not enough.

Documents

DocumentFor whom
Passport copyAll groups
Copy of the residence permit issued in DubaiStudents and graduates of UAE universities; for graduates of foreign universities if they hold a UAE residence
ICP approvalAll groups
High school diploma with a grade of at least 95%Top students only

A degree issued outside the UAE usually has to go through the attestation chain; the article "Attesting foreign documents for the UAE" explains it.

Family sponsorship

GroupWho can be sponsored
Top high school studentsParents only; not siblings
University students and graduatesSpouse and children, with proof of an employment contract, a steady monthly income and housing, under the family sponsorship conditions

This point is interesting for families: a top student with a golden residence can sponsor their parents.

Duration, renewal and staying outside the UAE

SubjectWhat the official sources say
Duration, per GDRFA10 years
Duration, per the UAE Government portal5 years for top high school students and 10 years for top university students
RenewalGDRFA states that student golden residences are not renewed after they expire
Staying outside the UAEGolden residence holders are exempt from the 180-day rule; the permit lapses only if it expires while the holder is outside the country

The two sources differ on the duration for high school students; ask GDRFA about the duration when applying. Because this residence is not renewed, plan another route for after it ends from now, for example a work residence or a green or golden residence for skilled employees.

How to apply in Dubai

Amer service centre, during working hoursTake a ticket, hand the application and documents to the employee, pay the fee

Fees in Dubai

ItemAmount
Residence permit feeAED 1,100
Knowledge dirhamAED 10
Innovation dirhamAED 10
In-country feeAED 500
DeliveryAED 20
Issuance fee increaseAED 100 for each year of residence beyond two years

GDRFA gives the service time as 5 days. The Emirates ID has a separate fee: ICP charges foreign residents AED 100 for each year of residence plus AED 100 for smart services. The medical test and insurance are also separate.

Two examples

These examples are hypothetical and only put the official conditions and fees above side by side.

Example 1: a top student in Dubai. A girl who earned her diploma with 97% at a licensed school in Dubai and has a Dubai residency file applies from inside the UAE.

ItemCalculationAmount
10-year residence permit, estimated with the GDRFA rule1,100 + (8 × 100)AED 1,900
Knowledge and innovation dirhams10 + 10AED 20
In-country fee—AED 500
Delivery—AED 20
Total—AED 2,440

If her residence is for 5 years, under the same rule the residence permit fee is AED 1,400 and the total AED 1,940. The Emirates ID, medical test and insurance are not in this table. Ask GDRFA when applying how the fee for years beyond two is calculated; the figures are estimates. She can then sponsor her parents.

Example 2: a graduate of a foreign university. A man who graduated 18 months ago with a GPA of 3.6 from a university among the world's top 100 meets the GPA condition and the two-year limit. If his GPA had been 3.4 or three years had passed since graduation, he would not fit this group under this page. To apply through GDRFA he also needs a Dubai residency file and the relevant ministry's approval in the ICP system.

Practical points

  • Check the university's ranking and class against the official list before applying; the measure is the UAE Ministry of Education's classification.
  • Do not miss the two-year limit after graduation.
  • Attest the transcript and degree before applying, and prepare the certificate of excellence and the recommendation letter.
  • To sponsor a spouse and children, prepare an employment contract, steady income and housing.
  • Because this residence is not renewed, note its end date.
  • See the other golden residence groups in the article "UAE Golden Residency: an overview".

Royal Golden does not give legal or immigration advice. This article is general information, and the decision on any residence rests with the official UAE authorities.
