Vanuatu plans tougher rules for naturalised citizens

The chairman of Vanuatu's Citizenship Commission says the government is preparing amendments that would require naturalised citizens to respect the country's laws and cultural values, with revocation and deportation proposed for breaches.

The Government of Vanuatu is preparing to strengthen its citizenship laws, according to Charles Maniel, Chairman of the Citizenship Commission, as reported by the Vanuatu Daily Post.

Under the planned amendments, naturalised citizens would be required to comply with Vanuatu's laws and cultural values. The proposals would allow a breach to lead to the revocation of citizenship and to deportation.

Applicants for naturalisation would also make a formal declaration that they will abide by the country's laws and requirements.

The amendments were first expected in the current sitting of Parliament but are now scheduled for next year's ordinary session. According to the report, the changes could later lead to constitutional amendments on citizenship.

What it means

The report concerns citizens by naturalisation. The final wording will only be known when the amendments reach Parliament; until then the current law applies.
