Dominica's prime minister raises US visa restrictions in Washington talks

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says he pressed the US State Department on the visa restrictions placed on Dominica in January and is now waiting for Washington's answer.

Dominica's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has raised the United States' visa restrictions on Dominica in a bilateral meeting with the US State Department, the Jamaica Gleaner reports, citing the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC).

The meeting took place last week while Mr Skerrit was in the United States for the United States-Caribbean Dialogue with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. He said he raised the matter respectfully but firmly and made a suggestion, which the State Department committed to discuss with the principals. Dominica holds that the restrictions are not justified, and the prime minister is now awaiting Washington's response.

The restrictions

The measures took effect on 1 January 2026 under a presidential proclamation, citing security and vetting concerns about Dominica's Citizenship by Investment programme. They suspend most immigrant and non-immigrant visas, including the B-1/B-2, F, M and J categories, and shorten visa validity. According to the report, applicants from Dominica may also face refundable visa bonds of US$10,000 to US$20,000 under broader US bond policies.

What it means

The restrictions remain in force until the United States decides otherwise. Holders of a Dominica passport planning a trip to the United States should check the current rules with the US embassy before applying.
