The photo is the simplest visa document and also one of the most common reasons an application comes back. The UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) sets out the photo conditions on its FAQ page. The source was checked on 24 October 2026.
The official conditions
According to the ICP:
- for a visa application: a colour personal photo with a white background;
- the photo must be recent, of high quality and fully meet the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO);
- the facial features and eyes must be clearly visible, with no shadows or reflections;
- the face must be straight on and the expression neutral;
- hats and sunglasses are not allowed; only medical glasses, provided they do not cover the eyes.
The ICP stresses that following these standards is necessary for the photo to be accepted.
Size
For UAE passports the ICP gives a size of 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres. For a visa, an online application usually takes a digital file. If you have the photo taken at a studio, this standard size with a high-quality digital file is a safe choice.
Taking the photo with a phone
- Stand by a plain white wall, with daylight from the front. Avoid harsh light from one side so no shadow falls.
- Have someone else take the photo, from about one to one and a half metres away and at eye level. A selfie distorts and enlarges the face.
- The head and the top of the shoulders should be in the frame, with the face filling most of the photo.
- Turn the flash off so no glare falls on the face or glasses.
- Do not use filters, beautification or face editing.
Common mistakes
- a cream, grey or patterned background;
- a broad smile, a tilted head or looking aside;
- hair over the eyes or glasses with glare;
- an old photo that differs from your face today;
- a photo of a photo, or a photo cropped from a passport.
Head coverings
The ICP's FAQ page says nothing about head coverings beyond the ban on hats. If you wear a headscarf or religious covering, the face should be fully visible from forehead to chin and the covering should cast no shadow; ask the case specialist before submission.
In Royal Golden's visa section, the photo gets a first quality check after upload and a specialist also reviews it before the official submission.
This article is general information. Acceptance of the photo rests with the UAE authorities.
